Blueberry Season


It's Blueberry Season!! Strawberry season flew on past us. Peach season was fun, Patti and Eva picked peaches off my tree, washed them and baked a cobbler immediately. It was fantastic.

But now... the moment we've all been waiting for... blueberry season.

So my good friend, Sandra, invited us to go blueberry picking with her on private property (we were invited). She called Connie, we grabbed Patti and Eva and off we went, piled into her car like clowns at the circus.

My father had blueberries growing in our backyard in upstate NY, which he covered each year with a net to keep the birdies out. And if we needed more blueberries (IF!!), we'd go down to Aunt Ethel's farm, climb up through the cow pasture and pick til our hands were blue.

But here in mild-mannered, historic, downtown Aiken, SC, climbing through cow pastures wasn't required.

Eva picked up real quick that the big, fat berries tasted the best

In all these years, I still prefer my Aunt Edna's recipe for blueberry muffins over any other blueberry recipe.

Lean in close, promise me your undying love, and I'll share the recipe with you.

1 1/2 c berries
3 c flour
1/2 c sugar
1 Tbsp baking powder
1/2 c brown sugar
1/2 c melted butter
1 c milk
3 eggs
1 tsp salt

Sift dry ingredients together - add brown sugar - add milk, butter, eggs and berries. 400 degrees,
20 minutes.

Here's Aunt Edna in her younger years dressed.... well... you can see.... dressed as a blueberry. Two things Aunt Edna loved: fancy breakfasts and Maine. What do they both have in common? Blueberries!
